Airing Sunday, September 5, at 8:00pm Eastern Time (5:00pm Pacific Time), and re-airing several more times during the next month, BMX pro Stephen Murray stars in FUEL TV’s signature 30-minute series “Firsthand.”
In this heartfelt “Firsthand,” we look at X Games Gold Medalist Stephen Murray’s life after the crash that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
We start off with a look at STAY STRONG’S First Annual Dirt Jump Contest, a contest held to support Stephen and other paralyzed athletes. Next, we dive into Stephen’s personal life, and learn what it’s like to go from a BMX pro to being confined to a wheel chair. We meet Stephen’s caregiver, girlfriend, and kids; and see what keeps this guy going with such a positive attitude. We watch family interaction at home, as Stephen encourages his son to ride dirt tracks. Then, we follow Stephen as he donates his old handicapped van to a family whose son is also confined to a wheelchair and needs proper transportation.
Next, we check out Stephen’s rehabilitation schedule and see the mental determination and devotion it takes for someone to overcome the challenges of paralysis. With all that has happened, Stephen still has an incredibly positive perspective on life.

YOUNG GUN BRETT BANASIEWICZ CLAIMS SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN AT DEW TOUR BMX DIRT FINALS
Banasiewicz Lands First Ever Cash Roll in BMX Dirt Final at Wendy’s Invitational
Portland, Ore. – August 13, 2010 – Fifteen-year-old Brett Banasiewicz won his second consecutive BMX dirt competition of the 2010 Dew Tour season at the Wendy’s Invitational in Portland, Ore. Coming through Open Qualifiers last month in Chicago to become the youngest winner in Dew Tour history, Banasiewicz continued his Dew Tour winning streak by topping the podium in tonight’s BMX dirt final.
A South Bend, Ind. native, Banasiewicz had first place secured before he dropped in for his third and final run. With overall scores determined by the average of a rider’s top two runs, Banasiewicz set the bar early with his first run, landing a 360 drop-in, frontflip no-hander and the first ever cash roll, a 180 backflip to 180 to earn a score of 94.12. Putting in a strong second run as well, Banasiewicz’s final score of 94.12 could not be beaten, and the 15-year-old treated the crowd to a second cash roll at the end of his run.
“It felt amazing knowing I’d already won, but I didn’t want to just take a victory run. I still wanted to try to improve my score so I pulled the cash roll again on the last hit in front of all the fans,” said Banasiewicz. “It feels good starting off the Tour with two wins, and I know I need to keep placing top three to stay in Cup contention now that the Vegas Finals are closer.”
Ryan Nyquist, 31, from San Jose, Calif., took the second-place position with a 92.81 and 19-year-old Dennis Enarson of La Mesa, Calif. rounded out the podium in third with a 91.94.
The four-day event continues tomorrow with the Skate Park and BMX Vert Finals on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday with the Skate Vert and BMX Park Finals.

MIKE SPINNER WINS BMX PARK, JAMIE BESTWICK WINS VERT AND BRETT BANASIEWICZ WINS DIRT FINALS AT DEW TOUR’S NIKE 6.0 BMX OPEN IN CHICAGO
Chicago, Ill. – July, 24 2010 – Chicago crowds were in full force Saturday at the Dew Tour’s Nike 6.0 BMX Open. Miami, Fla. native Mike Spinner, 22, won the BMX park final, England’s Jamie Bestwick, 39, won the vert final and 15-year-old Brett “Maddog” Banasiewicz became the youngest BMX athlete to top the podium after winning the dirt final. The two-day event held at Soldier Field’s South Festival Lot is the first BMX stop of the 2010 Dew Tour season.
After sitting out most of the 2009 Dew Tour season due to an injury, Spinner started the season off right by earning a first place score of 92.50. He threw out his signature quadruple tailwhip and a 1080 for his second Dew Tour win of his career. Twenty-five-year-old Daniel Dhers of Venezuela came in second with a 92.13. Defending Dew Cup champion, Garrett Reynolds, 19, of Toms River, N.J. placed a close third with a score of 91.63.
“After missing most of last season, I couldn’t be more excited to start the year off with a Dew Tour win,” said Spinner. “The competition is tough this year, but I’m excited to see what the season will bring and how it will all pan out in Vegas.”
As a five-time, undefeated BMX Vert Dew Cup champion, Bestwick, is setting himself up for a six-peat by starting off the season placing first with a 95.38. Bestwick’s consistency at the top of the podium was earned through his massive alley-oop variations and a turn-down flair. Chad Kagy, 31 from Gilroy, Calif., placed second with a 92.75 and Australian Steven McCann, 27, rounded out the podium in third with a 92.38.
“It’s a great start to the season. I’m super excited to take the first stop, but we still have three more and I never underestimate my competition,” said Bestwick. “The next three stops are going to be the hardest of my life. Everybody makes it to Vegas so I know the heat is going to be turned up.”
The youngest BMX athlete to win a final in Dew Tour history, Banasiewicz was a BMX dirt crowd favorite as a semi-local from South Bend, Ind. The 15-year-old’s winning run included a barspin off the roll-in, front flip no hander, truck driver, barspin up jump down triple whip and a wall ride to tail whip to earn the top score of the night with a 92.94. Fellow Midwesterner, Brandon Dosch age 21 from Lake Orion, Mich., took the second place position with a 90.56 and Australia’s Luke Parslow, 25, finished third with an 89.69.
“I wanted to play it safe for the first two runs, so I put a lot more pressure on the third run,” said Banasiewicz. “I’m just looking to stay healthy, ride my bike and keep riding the Dew Tour.”
The two-day BMX event at Chicago’s Soldier Field South Festival Lot is the second of five stops on the Dew Tour, with 28,134 people experiencing the competitions. The Dew Tour will continue on to Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City and conclude in Las Vegas for the Dew Tour Championships featuring skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross.
