DK Bicycles presents the first annual contest at Brett Banasiewicz skatepark, The Kitchen Skatepark, in South Bend, Indiana. Pro on Saturday, AM on Sunday.
Ever wonder what it’s like to live like a pro bmx’er, to have your own indoor park, and to be the captain of your own destiny? Check out this gallery ESPN recently posted of our boy, Brett Banasiewicz, and his digs. He’s got a good set up. Our favorite part, of course, is the fridge…but I’d take the Kitchen as well.
Here’s another highlight edit from the first ever pro contest that went down in Brett Banasiewicz’s Kitchen park. It was definitely a success and some great riding went down. Check it out below.

The Kitchen is Brett’s brainchild to help foster the progression of BMX as a sport. We look forward to more great things to come out. Cook some good stuff up!
Brett Banasiewicz opened “The Kitchen” BMX and Skate Park nearly seven months ago. Now he is hosting his very first professional competition there.
The 17-year-old BMX star has already enjoyed a wildly successful career, having won events like the Dew Tour and BMX Masters, and is bringing the action sports spotlight to South Bend.
The Kitchen’s very first professional and amateur BMX contest is slated for Saturday and Sunday (Jan 14, 15), and will feature 20 professionals and more than 50 amateur riders, including some local talents.
While Banasiewicz himself will not be competing—the fresh ink on the high schooler’s calf hasn’t quite healed—he promises the level of competition will still be high.
“If you come Saturday, we’ve got ten of the best pros, so you’re going to be seeing big tricks like flips, spins, whips, everything,” Banasiewicz said. “There’s people that I’ve competed with on the Dew Tour that are here. So it’s pretty cool.
“I want to give other people a chance to ride the park, have fun and compete.”
The pro side of the competition will feature riders like Jeremy Ball, Ben Eylander, Brandon Dosch, Big Daddy, Pat Casey, Mykel Laarin and Gleen Salyers.
Both the professional competition on Saturday and the Amateur contest on Sunday cost $3 to watch. Plus, registration is still open for both contests and costs $25 for the expert ride and $50 for the pros. All-day practice on Friday is free to watch and doors will open at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
The competition is all part of Banasiewicz’s dream to bring interest in action sports, and talent, to South Bend. When he opened the park using his own money in June of 2010, Banasiewicz said he was most excited to see people progress.
“Before we opened the park, a lot of kids were good and then they lost it because when the other park closed they didn’t have anywhere really to ride,” he explained. “Then when we opened up, you can tell they’re getting their talent back and their smooth flow back, which is really good.”
This weekend’s Pro/Am is important not only because it represents The Kitchen’s coming out party as a competition venue. It’s also a vital step in fostering the talent that already exists in the area, as Banasiewicz knows first-hand.
“It means a lot because, like I said, I want to see people progress and the one way I did that was contests,” he said. “I wouldn’t have gotten noticed if it wasn’t for a contest. So just, I like it, giving people an opportunity.”
This weekend’s Pro/Am may not produce the next Brett Banasiewicz, but there is one thing the BMX phenom knows: “It’s just going to be a lot of good riding.”
